Can I Stamp On This? |
Text and Samples by Tyra L. Smith
From a stamp
artist's perspective, there are five basic types of cardstocks.
Click on a link below for a discussion of that type of cardstock.

One of the major differences between Glossy Cardstocks, Semi-Coated Matte Cardstocks, and Matte Cardstocks is the degree of "tooth" -- the ability of a cardstock to "grab" and hold certain media like chalks, pastels, powdered pigments, etc. Glossy cardstocks have NO tooth, and very little (if any) absorbency. Semi-Coated Matte Cardstocks have LITTLE tooth, and moderate absorbency. And Matte Cardstocks have LOTS of tooth, and high absorbency. While the texture of a cardstock can have a slight effect on how well a technique works (or doesn't), the tooth of a cardstock can make a big difference.
Translucent Vellums and Specialty Cardstocks have their own unique characteristics which affect the techniques that work well, so they are dealt with individually.
